Web design is pretty much what it sounds like- it's designing for the internet, whether it's creating websites or working in programs like Flash. Also, you do have to be some what creative when designing websites, but I know some web design majors who prefer the coding part rather than the design part.
Graphic design is designing mostly for print, with some designing for the web (ex: banner ads). In graphic design you can do numerous things like working on layouts for magazines, creating logos or designing packaging for consumer goods.
As far as income goes, it all depends on where you live, how much experience you have and what your job title is. A junior designer obviously won't be making as much as a senior designer or an art director. You'll just have to do some of your own research to figure out how much a graphic designer makes versus a web designer.
I will tell you from personal experience that there does seem to be a lot more web design jobs out there. I majored in graphic design and although I enjoy what I do, its been really tough finding a full-time job, but hopefully the economy will get better soon!

Now days its same job (web and graphic designing), most companies now wants their employees to be specialized in both things. Go to any good web design company website like exposurewebservices.co.uk, you will see they call themselves web designers, but they actually make website and graphics.

Simply 'ART'! It is also called Ad Art or Graphic Art.
A print is the physical form containing the Art. It is still art weather it is printed, digital, sketched, drawn or painted if it has a commercial intent it is Art.

There is generally no major in Web development. Computer science is the standard.
Good schools for computer science include NYU, Holy Cross, BC, BU.

The Adobe Creative Suite is industry standard these days. It comes with Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Acrobat, etc. Get the latest version of it and you really don't need anything else, unless he wants to get into Flash animations. Flash is made by Macromedia and you can do more than make animated internet ads with it. Games and applications are possible as well. A graphic interface HTML compiler/editor is great, as well. GoLive comes with the Adobe Creative Suite, but others are available. Wish him luck as this field is getting quite crowded and competition is fierce.

If he already has all the basic adobe suite programs for graphic design like, photoshop, illustrator, indesign, flash, and dreamweaver. he will not need any more programs for now. plus they are very expensive!
I would get him a really nice wireless mouse, or some big color full graphic design books. he can use them for design ideas (graphic designers need a source for ideas) or you could get him a subscription to one of these great magazines. http://www.youthedesigner.com/2008/09/08…

Even in the face of a weak economy, IT confidence and paychecks haven’t taken a major hit.
It wasn't exactly Christmas in July for IT workers around the world, but with a number of new surveys pointing out that the tech job market remains in fairly solid shape, it qualified as at least an early Thanksgiving.

printing all my work worked out to be very expensive for me too.
most universities are absolutely ok with you producing a cd or dvd with your work on it. make a nice presentation of your work: using flash or a similar software. that in itself is pretty impressive.
thats what i did for my uni and got in. so.
good luck! :)

Needing money to make any kind of graphical art is BS. There are several free programs that emulate Photoshop (Gimp, Paint.net) that you can use, plenty of free photos to use (istock's free image of the week, dreamstime.com's free photos, sxc.hu) and you can make printouts and put them in a clear cover in a binder. If that costs too much you can put them on a disk and burn it.
Any high ranking design university goes on talent. If you have talent that is all they should need.

I really don't know what to tell you, maybe get a job at a print shop if you want to cut corners. I am in one of the best Canadian privitized arts Universities, NSCAD. It was like jumping through hoops to get in, but I worked at a photo shop for a few years with a digital department. I would guess my portfolio is easily a grand retail cost anyway.
Not to discourage you but the percentage that gets into my school is maybe 3% of all applicants. From what I know they won't even consider you. It may be detremental to your scholastic career to make assumptions like you don't need a portfolio. Yes you can apply the next year again, but they won't forget your name. I would wait a year and build up a solid portfolio if it was me.

you don't require to go for university. you might learn web development from other private institutes.

You will need more experience than that to actually get a well paid web development job. First, volunteer your time and skills to companies looking for people to build websites for free. With a masters degree and 6 month experience, they'll think you're a steal. Get more experience thru there if possible.
If this is not an option, then look at job sites such as indeed.com, monster.com, dice.com and look for entry-level web development jobs.

This is a vast topic and with a dozen ways to skin the same cat.
Whatever you do you need HTML. It is a mark-up language and not programming.
To get logic into your web page, the easiest (learning) route is to begin with PHP which is also not really a programming language.
From there you want evolve into Java or some other Object Oriented Programming like C# but I'd personally go Java.
If you think you are really gifted and extremely smart them jump straight into Java and never look back!

That all depends on what you mean by web development. Do you mean actual application development or site design.
If you mean application development, you need to start out with some fundamentals. learn javascript or php then advance into .net languages like vb.net, c#, or even Delphi.net.
If you mean site design, dreamweaver may be helpful but there is a bit of a learning curve. Look into th basics of html and css. www.w3schools.com provides a good source of tutorials.
Dreamweaver is not robust enough to do any serious application development.

hi, you can learn Javascript, JSP for web development.
Apart from that PHP is taking a nice ground in web development area, so if you want you can go for that also.
Another is ASP, very simple for web designing nd development. Even, the millions people who are using ORKUT, that is also a ASP site.
But as you have finished 10th now, so will prefer you to learn JavaScript first, and before that make a firm grip on all HTML tags nd script.
Plz visit:

Well the Internet is not going to go away anytime soon, or be replaced by anything, yes it will evolve, but what to, no-one really knows yet.
That said I am a professional web design, and have been since 1991, when the www was first invented, when I started html was the new language! So long as you keep learning the new languages that come out and are good at what you do then yes there will always be a demand for web professionals. Since 1991 I have learnt html, javascript, Java, ASP, PHP, C#, ASP.net to name a few plus some standalone languages as well. You might say that some of those languages aren't needed anymore, but I disagree simply because I am working on anywhere between 30 - 40 sites per week and some of them have been online for 10 years and use nothing more than basic html.
I still believe that the majority of businesses don't fully understand the power of the Internet and how it can make/break their businesses.
In short this is one industry that is always going to evolve and change, as a developer, you have to sink or swim!

There will definitely be growth in demand for developers in the future. The web is growing at a crazy rate, and more and more businesses are looking for ways to improve their existing online presence.
One thing to keep in mind is to specialize, but always be prepared for that specialization to be outdated - so you need be willing to learn new technologies, but once you understand a few skills in the biz, it's easy to do.
Also, a good education is very very important. You will be far more respected and employable than someone who taught themselves because you are far more likely to be exposed to proper techniques.

I would suggest that web developers will definitely be in demand in the future. The web is growing faster than any other creative industry. As the internet gets faster, the web will be far less restrictive than it is now and developers will be needed to do the 'other' part of the creative/ad cycle. It is also well paid. Not many people have the skills that a developer possesses, so you become a valuable asset to a creative team - and they'll pay to keep you around.

There are some on-line business networking sites where businesses like yours are members and where, when you've built up some relationships, the people in your network recommend you to their network. (Send me an message and I'll send you an invite to one that I belong to.)
Don't forget the opportunities to promote what you do off-line. Again, one of the best ways is recommendations through networking. Check out what groups there are locally. We know an IT guy who uses this as a way of increasing his business and it works very well. People in his network will call him when they're with one of their clients who mentions they're having IT problems.
Good luck!

I have hired several employees from Odesk.com its a freelancer website were you can post your skills and search for open jobs and you can apply. at the beginning you might need to drop your prices to get your career started but later on the more you get hired the more you can charge

Computer (or Management) Information Systems if offered, if not Computer Science
They offer not only the computer aspect of the web development, but a management and marketing side to it as well.

I suggest you buy a SQL reference book and start playing around with it. You can also download visual web developer from Microsoft and start developing little web pages that utilize a
database. There is a significant learning curve since you have to learn a programming language as well as SQL. SQL by itself is a huge deal if you want to get good at it. Just start small and every project you do will be better than the one before and then your're an expert! It pays well to know how to do these things.

Any good text editor (Notepad Plus is good and free) or an IDE (Aptana Studio is free), a good web browser (Firefox with at least the Firebug add-on) and a local (installed on the development computer) web server.

Not so sure about you categorizing yourself there...but I know that my downstairs tenant is a "software engineer" and he specializes in PHP and MySQL and worked with Verizon Wireless. If you know what those are. Clarify technologies.
