Also, you do have to be some what creative when designing websites, but I know some web design majors who prefer the coding part rather than the design part. As far as income goes, it all depends on where you live, how much experience you have and what your job title is. I am in one of the best Canadian privitized arts Universities, NSCAD. It was like jumping through hoops to get in, but I worked at a photo shop for a few years with a digital department. I would guess my portfolio is easily a grand retail cost anyway. Not to discourage you but the percentage that gets into my school is maybe 3% of all applicants. From what I know they won't even consider you. It may be detremental to your scholastic career to make assumptions like you don't need a portfolio. Yes you can apply the next year again, but they won't forget your name. I would wait a year and build up a solid portfolio if it was me. To get logic into your web page, the easiest (learning) route is to begin with PHP which is also not really a programming language.
From there you want evolve into Java or some other Object Oriented Programming like C# but I’d personally go Java.
If you think you are really gifted and extremely smart them jump straight into Java and never look back!

I still believe that the majority of businesses don't fully understand the power of the Internet and how it can make/break their businesses. In short this is one industry that is always going to evolve and change, as a developer, you have to sink or swim!
